At a Glance: Agarwood Blend - Sweet Citrus Resin - Spiced Woods - Floral Lift - Light Smoke - Complex - Atmospheric
Main Notes / Character:
A complex agarwood-based blend with a shifting, cloud-like structure. It opens bright and slightly citrusy, with a soft sweetness that lifts the darker woody base. As it develops, agarwood becomes more present, warm, resinous, and earthy. The overall effect is airy yet layered, moving between brightness and deeper woody richness rather than staying static. It feels atmospheric, refined, and slightly ethereal, with a calm but intricate evolution throughout the burn.
History / Lineage:
Saiun is part of Yamadamatsu’s Premium incense range from Kyoto, a house founded in the Edo period with a long history in kōboku (aromatic wood) and medicinal herb trade. This series focuses on high-grade natural materials, especially agarwood, combined with sandalwood, herbs, and spices to create layered, evolving compositions rooted in traditional Japanese incense craftsmanship.
Meaning behind the Name:
“Saiun” (彩雲) means “iridescent clouds” or “coloured clouds,” a classical Japanese poetic image symbolising shifting light, layered colour, and transient beauty, mirroring the incense’s evolving, cloud-like fragrance structure.
