At a Glance: Premium Agarwood - Deep Sweet Resin - Chocolate Wood - Espresso Warmth - Light Smoke - Rich - Meditative
Main Notes / Character:
A rich, dessert-like agarwood expression built on deep, high-quality wood. It opens warm and intensely sweet, with notes often described as chocolate, caramel, and espresso-like richness layered over dark aromatic wood.
As it develops, the sweetness is balanced by a deeper, slightly bitter agarwood core, giving it structure and preventing it from becoming overly soft. The result is dense, smooth, and luxurious with a steady evolution from sweet warmth into grounded resinous wood.
History / Lineage:
Kumoi is part of Yamadamatsu’s Premium incense range from Kyoto, a historic incense house founded in 1772 and known for its expertise in kōboku (aromatic woods) such as agarwood, sandalwood, and kyara. This range focuses on high-grade natural materials and traditional blending methods that highlight the full depth and character of rare woods, especially high grade agarwood.
Meaning behind the Name:
“Kumoi” (雲井 / interpreted as “sky dwelling” or “above the clouds”) evokes height, openness, and expansiveness. It reflects the incense’s sense of depth and lift, rich and grounded in wood, yet still airy and expansive in feeling.
