At a Glance: Agarwood (Kalimantan) - Deep Resin Woods - Nutty Buttery Sweetness - Dark Spice - Light Smoke - Meditative - Intense
Main Notes / Character:
A deep, immersive agarwood composition built around rich Kalimantan wood. It opens dark, resinous, and immediately dense, with a thick woody base that feels grounded and enveloping. As it burns, a distinctive buttery, nutty sweetness emerges layered with soft spice and a subtle savoury edge that gives it unusual richness and complexity.
Despite its intensity, it develops a refined balance between darkness and softness, moving between heavy resin, sweetness and spice. The overall effect is contemplative and absorbing, designed more for focused listening than background use with a long lingering presence in the space.
History / Lineage:
Ōju is part of Yamadamatsu’s Premium incense range from Kyoto, a historic incense house founded in 1772 and known for its expertise in kōboku (aromatic woods) such as agarwood, sandalwood, and kyara. This range focuses on high-grade natural materials and traditional blending methods that highlight the full depth and character of rare woods, especially Kalimantan aloeswood.
Meaning behind the Name:
“Ōju” (鷹樹, often interpreted as “eagle tree” or symbolic noble wood) evokes strength, height, and stillness, reflecting the incense’s powerful, elevated character and its association with rare, deeply aged agarwood.
