At a Glance: Premium Sandalwood - Creamy Woods - Resin Sweetness - Low Smoke Meditative

Main Notes / Character:
A richer, more polished sandalwood profile than the standard Yu-en Byakudan. The scent opens with a clean, slightly creamy sandalwood sweetness, then settles into soft woody depth with a light resinous warmth underneath. Despite the “Gokuhin” refinement, it remains restrained and quiet in projection, with very low smoke and a smooth continuous burn. The overall feel is deep and composed. Less airy than the standard version, more grounded and meditative, with a subtle richness that builds gently rather than announcing itself.

History / Lineage:
Yu-en Byakudan Gokuhin sits in Yamadamatsu’s refined low-smoke Yu-en series from Kyoto, a house with roots tracing back to Edo-period incense and medicinal wood trading. The Gokuhin designation indicates a higher-grade expression, focusing on a more refined selection of sandalwood to elevate clarity, depth, and natural sweetness while still keeping the daily use philosophy intact.

Meaning behind the Name:
“Byakudan” (白檀) refers to sandalwood. “Yu-en” (幽煙) means faint, subtle smoke, reflecting its low-smoke design. “Gokuhin” (極品) translates to “superior grade,” indicating a more refined selection of materials and a deeper, more elevated interpretation of the same sandalwood theme.
