Yu-en Jinko (Low Smoke)
Description
At a Glance: Agarwood - Dark Woods - Soft Resin Smoke - Earthy Sweetness - Low Smoke - Calm - Contemplative
Main Notes / Character:
A soft, low-smoke agarwood profile that leans more approachable than traditional heavy jinko. It opens with dry, woody darkness, then develops a gentle resin sweetness and faint earthy spice underneath. The texture is smooth rather than sharp or medicinal with a quiet, meditative presence that sits close to the air. Compared to sandalwood variants, this is deeper and more reflective, but still restrained for daily use.
History / Lineage:
Yu-en Jinko is part of Yamadamatsu’s Kyoto-based Yu-en low-smoke series, continuing an Edo-period tradition of refined incense making. It focuses on the Japanese appreciation of jinko (agarwood), a material long valued in temple culture and kōdō practice for its depth and spiritual character.
Meaning behind the Name:
“Jinko” (沈香) refers to agarwood, the prized aromatic wood used in classical Japanese incense traditions. “Yu-en” (幽煙) reflects the low, subtle smoke style, emphasising quiet fragrance rather than intensity or projection.
